Flexible Vacation Plans
We are just wrapping up a two-week vacation that didn't go as planned, and we wouldn't want it any other way. God seems to really bless us, when we have to make up our travel plans on the fly. This year, we had planned to stop in Charlotte on our way to see Beth's parents in Florida. But it was a very busy time for Beth's Aunts and Uncles in NC, so it seemed a good idea not to add more houseguests to their burden. Beth suggested we spend three days in Gatlinburg, Tenn. and it was a great idea. That's where we honeymooned in 2006. This time, Cody was with us and we had fun shopping the parkway and talking with the very interesting people who run the stores and shops there. We also visited the Artisan's Craft Loop just outside of town. People run their shops in the front and live in the back. It's very cool to see the ceramics, wood, stone and jewelry they make. Once we made it to Florida, Tropical Storm Debby messed with our outdoor plans. We had a great time with Marv, Lynn, Zona, Chris and Holly. We visited the Geneva Historical Society and enjoyed it immensely. Geneva is a little town in rural Florida where Beth's Dad lives. We also went to Port Canaveral and watched the cruise ships leave their docks over dinner. Even though it was raining, it was a spectacular sight. Rather than wait for the rain to stop, we agreed that we should leave a couple of days early, and stop in Gatlinburg on the way home, too. Bethany was with us for the drive back (she flew down on her own, since her work schedule kept her from leaving with us in the car)... She fell in love with Gatlinburg, the Smokies and the people as Beth and I have, too. On the drive back to Chicago, we stopped in to see my nieces Eleanor and Claire in Cincinnati. Lots of twists and turns, but it turned out to be a very good vacation and a very excellent adventure! We are blessed to be able to travel and spend some time away from our challenging daily routines.
