I overheard some savage comments today, about someone I work with. It was relentless and the more hurtful the comments, the more the group laughed uncontrollably.
I would have liked to have left the area, but I had work to do at that moment that I couldn't interrupt.
The butt of the joke does the same job as I do, and frankly I thought "well, they probably talk about me like that, too." Which they may do. But it also hit me that "I" talk about people like that all too often, as well.
The taming of the tongue is mandated in Scripture, but it's a lifetime effort.
I've been pretty casual about managing my mouth lately. Overhearing this conversation really convicted me. But honestly, I like a good story and a little gossip as much as anybody. It takes will power for me not to fall into that habit. It's a good reminder to realize that the tongue is a very powerful weapon with deadly accuracy that can "kill" people with words and sarcastic remarks.
